Collection of gouaches of medicinal plants
Hi all! Trough the Dutch Wikimedia Chapter, @Ian Velthuis (WMNL), Commons received a large content donation of 1260 gouaches with medicinal plants from the "Wereldmuseum" (World museum) in the Netherlands. These are scans from leporello books. We like to request some help in identifying these images, perhaps you are interested. A table is listed here of all books: w:nl:Wikipedia:GLAM/Wereldmuseum - Leporelloboeken - RV-360-383. We would like help with transcribing the Chinese characters and listing the scientific names of the plants if possible. In the table, but of course as well on the image pages on Commons. It is highly appreciated if you could share this request to people with knowledge of Chinese language as well as plants, who could be interested. Of course, you may like to use these images on zh.wikipedia. Thanks very much, Ellywa(留言) 2026年10月13日 (二) 20:02 (UTC)
- I don't think those are all photos of medicinal plants, but they do look like photos of Chinese medicinal materials. Some of them appear to be the names of animals that would be used as medicine.

- Yes indeed, some appear butterflies, we noted.
- I can transcribe the characters in the images, but finding the specific species referred to is more difficult. This is because some of the names are very ancient, making it difficult to find information on them today. The characters in the example image are "蓍草". It is a general term for plants in the genus Achillea. Could you show me how such information should be recorded once the identification has been made?
- Hi Vesekskiy,
- I think the 'Wereldmuseum' would be very happy with any identification, even if patchy or at genus level.
- On pages like RV-360-383a I've posted a table with all images from each book. The table has empty spaces for characters, the scientific name (Wetenschappelijke naam), the English and the Dutch names. Adding any information to the table would be very much much appreciated! Meanwhile, I'll get to translating the headers in the table.
- I have transcribed all the characters in table a. The images starting from a48 depict plants. Where the name is sufficiently clear, I have also provided the scientific names. Some names are ambiguous. For example, a60 "龍鬚菜" can refer to about 20 different genera or species—so I am unable to fill in the table.
